For the past several months, as part of my self-improvment, i have been walking daily and doing Chinese practicing. For many months I was just listening to audiobooks, mostly from Mandarin Companion, but probalby 2-3 months ago I started working through the Get Speaking Mandarin courses i had purchased from Outlier Linguistics. I made an Anki-like app to help me track and repeat things I’ve gone through over time. So far I have done the 25 Lessons of GSM1, and haved made it through first 10 lessons of GSM2. I originally had a goal of finishing by the end of the year but it may be hard. The jump in complexity from GSM1 to GSM2 took some time to get used to.
My process is pretty much to walk 30-60 minutes at 5-6 AM in the morning and go through the audio files shadowing for the whole time while walking. For GSM1 they is self contained 20x audio sentences. For GSM2, I have been using the 100x sentence audio files and 50x vocabulary files. The end of cycle lessons (5,10…) are daunting with like ~30 sentence audio files which takes a long time to go through.
Trying to think of my ideal process for going through these to practice muscle memory with Chinese. I think it may be a heavy process like 100x initial time, then 50x, then 10x once it becomes easier. Using hardcoded audio files for this is challenge but I can always scrub to the end after feeling comfortable again with the sentence. My app doesn’t have Anki’s “good/bad” review rating, so the pattern of repeting is set not based on how well I performed.
I also want to do some of this with Japanese, as I think the Chinese pronunciation is a bit more challenging. I think Japanese may be easier to handle w/o as much pronounced tones (vs pitch shift).
